Secret piazzas of Italy: Piazza del Duomo, Lecce

Wandering through the picturesque spider’s web of streets of Lecce, capital of Salento in southern Puglia, I make my way to one of its main treasures, a ‘piazza’ unlike many others and wonder if I will still be awe struck this time round.

The main square of Piazza del Duomo in the baroque city of Lecce surprises with its grandeur and intimacy all at the same time. Of all Italian squares, this is one of my favourites and it’s certainly one of the most beautiful for its overall setting, its spaciousness and for providing a solemn oasis of peace and splendour. The bright southern light reflects off the warm tones of the sandy coloured limestone buildings and it takes my breath away every time I enter it and compels me to sit on the steps of its cathedral and admire every little detail. It’s a baroque feast for the eyes and surrounded by so many imposing buildings such as the Bishop’s Palace, the Seminary and the tall bell tower that overlooks the entire city, every visit reveals new surprises and at any time of the day, its atmosphere weaves a powerful spell on me and the other visitors.

This square totally embodies the baroque extravagance present in every corner of this captivating city and yet its enclosed design gives it an air of tranquillity and seclusion unlike many other Italian piazzas. As I wander back to sit on the cathedral’s steps at night, the piazza welcomes me with the magic atmosphere of a living stage set and I feel part of a very special public show of local life unfolding all around me. Just as I will never tire of visiting this beautiful square by day or night, I’m sure that your experience of this piazza will surpass any expectations and will make your stay in Lecce a truly memorable one!
